So You Want To Be A Hero?
Well, I have discussed some ideas in regard to level capping (currently at 20) with some friends of mine (all owners of Guild Wars) and we have all came to the same conclusion: Capping at level 20 just doesn't do it for us. Not that we are against game imbalances by any means, but the idea of character progression is what keeps us going on, trying to reach further new goals. The idea that when you reach level 20 that all you get is more skills and new armor, isn't that thrilling. Not that we dislike getting new skills and such, but it takes away that sense of attainement. We would really love to see the level cap at 40 perhaps. This would show that you have been around the block a time or two and give you a sense of being one of the old timers, who have been with the game since it's inception. I know, I know, everyone is pretty uptight with the level capping issue and it has been tossed around more times than people can say, but it seems to be an issue that most of the players that I've spoken with, would love to see go away. The idea that everyone and their Mom has reached level 20 around you, doesn't show that you are a true hero among just the average game player. Maybe this is just ego or simply aesthetics, but the whole reason that anyone ever played Dungeons & Dragons for instance, was to get their character to that point that they were very high level and a hero in their own right. I.E. look at me the big bad warrior with the +2000 Sword Of Worldcrushing ... or the wizard with the 11th lvl spell of Power of Demigod or some such nonsense. It was awesome indeed! Well, I am sure that not everyone would agree with this set of arguments, but we for one (and there are many of us), would like to turn the heads of the Devs at ArenaNet to say, "Hey, we your fans, would love to see some higher level attainements for our characters". Thanks to all for reading this.

Moot point. A-Net has a 100% firm stance on L20 being max. It will never change. It might several years\packs down the road but for the time being it will stay this way.

Level cap will not increase. Lvl 20 would be the same as lvl 90. Theres no
reason to raise the cap.

And eventually, you'll see a whole lot of lvl 99 farmbots. No thank you. I like this game, because people can't brag with their lvls. It is quite easy to become lvl 20, and you still have to earn respect after that. There are way to many powerlevelers in this game. If you think lvl 20 is nothing, you will not change your mind when you see lvls 99 all around you.

If you'll recall, most standard DnD games have people's levels capped at 20 too.
But that's all besides the point. The point is, we don't want people to grind to reach max. In other words, we are sacrificing your prized traditional measure of "achievement" for fair and skill-based play. This game isn't about who has the best character because they spent the most time. It's about who has more skill. You will never see your level cap change.
Perhaps you'd like a different form to measure progress and that sense of attainment. Well, that's fine... as long as it doesn't give you an advantage over someone else who hasn't played as long. (15k armor, for example?)

Sorry, but if the low level cap bothers you, you're missing the point of the game entirely. It's about SKILL, not time invested into mindlessly grinding levels. Sure, you need time and practise to become skilled, but I don't see what raising the cap would achieve other than making PvE a lot more boring than it already is.

I Want To See My Level At 40 So That I Feel More Accomplished As A Player And Person Than Someone Who Hasnt Reached It Because Ive Been Farming Longer And I Have Missed The Entire Point Of Guild Wars

Aah, Yes, I Knew There Would Be Backlash.
Yes, I do agree that it is a game of skill, but rewards are rewards. I would still love to see the progression of your character beyond 20. But of course each to his own. Even if they made mission badges or such, that would even be cool. Yeah, yeah, ego talking again. Thanks anyway, for your input.

Mission badges would be interesting. Little tidbits like that, or like the PvP rank? emotes, serve to give people a sense of accomplishment, without actually providing them a competitive advantage. I'm all in favor of little things like that, I suppose.

If anything, they should just get rid of levels. Start everyone with max attributes. The only "leveling" would be for skill points.
I'm not actually for this, but I wouldnt be against it either.
The best part of the game is the high level stuff. i.e. Tombs, SF, UW, FoW, Missions after Droks, etc...

People played to role-play with their friends and have fun. I don't remember and PnP sessions where we ran around the country-side grinding
for XP.

Part of the appeal of Guildwars is the idea that "Skill" and not "Time spent" determines your success in the game (it even says so on the back of their game covers)... If the level cap was increased to something similar to most MMORPGs, "Time spent" becomes more of an issue than "Skill". Take Lineage ][ for instance. That game is HARDCORE grinding at its finest.... Your weapons, armor, and level determine your success in the game. World of Warcraft might have a lesser level cap and is easier to max out, but weapons and level still take premise over skill. Anet has made a nice but delicate balance of Time spent vs. Skill, and modifying one might severly hinder the other.
Though increasing lvl cap sounds like a good idea, I'd like to stay safe and keep things the way they are...

Maybe increasing the amount of gold sinks (i.e. different armor looks, weps, accessories, areas, monsters, etc...) might give you and your friends that sense of accomplishment you all seek...

no backlash SCARLETTHORN; most here are just stating what Anet already has time and again. That they also agree with Anet just shows how much the company understood the desires of those they appealed to when they marketed it.
Fact is, part of the appeal of GWP was in its level 20 cap. Opene ended grind does work in some games, but not all. take Silkroad; I enjoyed it...until i got to level 20. then--when the game is supposed to start getting interesting, you find yourself under attack from level 40 to level 60 players, eagar to tear you to shreads.
Not so in GW. You reach your full potential quickly, and then its down to just casual tweeks and skills to build yourself into the best player you can be. what works for onedoes not work for all, but at the end of the day, anyone you meet in the arenas is going to be about the same strength as you. And in PvE.
I'm sorry you feel that GW needs its cap increased. /not signed. I, personally, love it.

I believe that they should raise the max level now that factions is coming... missions wont be as fun because new characters wont get allowed in them, because party leaders will choose those who carried their level 20s over, and we are all going to be level 20 throughout the whole game. I admit that is a good way to play, but i dont think its a good idea to play a game and never progress.

how am i going to bring my level 20 Assassin or Ritualist over? And how would raising the level cap help new players in the first place? If i "need" a level 20 healer now, what will happen to your level 15 when I "need" a level 30?
Your logic is flawed. Old players make new characters all the time. Personally, I'm on my second mesmer (soon to be third; I'm deleting it.) and intend to remake my ele with factions: I like the new skins better. While there will be an abundance of level 20s at teh start fo Factions, that does not mean that all elder players will not be making new toons.
Personally, I intend to tbeat the game from level 1 first, so I can see factions version of Pre-Sear. I want all the story this time through. And I feel more accomplishment when I don't twink myself.

i kind of agree since reaching level 20 means there nothing left to work towards. there is no sense of achievement at all in gw where currency seems to be more important than character development, and why shouldnt someone whos played for a year have a little more to show than someone who has played for a month?
